Boiler Repair or Replace? How to Actually Decide

Age, repair history and the type of fault all matter — a straight framework for deciding whether to fix your boiler or replace it.

It's one of the most common questions we're asked, and the honest answer depends on more than just the current fault.

Under 8 years old: repair, almost always

If your boiler is under 8 years old, a repair is nearly always the right call — even a moderately expensive one. You've got plenty of working life left in the unit, and most parts are still readily available.

8–12 years: depends on the fault

In this range, we'll usually give you both prices — the repair and a replacement quote — so you can weigh them up yourself. A minor part swap, repair every time. A second or third repair within 18 months on the same unit is often a sign the boiler's on its way out regardless of what today's fault is.

Over 12–15 years, major component failure: replace

If a boiler in this age range needs a major part — a heat exchanger being the classic example — the honest advice is usually to replace rather than repair. We'd rather tell you that plainly than take a large repair fee for a boiler that fails again next winter.

Other signs worth weighing in

Rising gas bills with no other explanation. Parts becoming hard to source (a sign the manufacturer's stopped actively supporting the model). Frequent pressure loss. A boiler that takes noticeably longer to heat the house than it used to. None of these alone means “replace,” but two or three together usually tips the decision.

Getting a straight answer, not a sales pitch

Any engineer who recommends a full replacement without pricing the repair alongside it is worth a second opinion. We'll always give you both numbers and a genuine recommendation — sometimes that means a smaller invoice for us, and that's fine.
