Boiler Kettling or Banging? What the Noise Actually Means
A kettling, banging or rumbling boiler is rarely serious on its own — but it's telling you something specific. Here's what.
A boiler that kettles (a noise like a kettle coming to the boil) or bangs is uncomfortable to listen to, but the cause is usually straightforward: limescale or sludge building up on the heat exchanger, causing steam pockets that create the noise as water flows past them.
Is it dangerous?
Not immediately, but it's a sign of reduced efficiency and, left long enough, accelerated wear on the heat exchanger — the most expensive single part in a boiler to replace.
The usual fix
A power flush or chemical clean clears sludge from the wider system, and a limescale-focused clean addresses scale specifically inside the boiler itself. Which one you need depends on the cause, which is worth a proper diagnosis rather than assuming.
